Steffen Oppel - Conservation Scientist / Ornithologist
I work as an ornithological scientist at the Swiss Ornithological Institute where I study the ecology and dispersal of raptors. Before moving to Switzerland in 2023, I worked as a scientist at the RSPB Centre for Conservation Science to save globally threatened species, and I continue this role in a voluntary capacity
The goal of my work is to achieve effective conservation of threatened species and their habitats through a thorough understanding of their ecology and demography and ensure that management measures are based on solid evidence.
MY LATEST RESEARCH
In May 2024 we showed in a new paper that only about 20% of little owls survive their first year of life - and that the duration of snow cover in winter can severely reduce that number.
